A Grex name may be given to any horticultural cross. This name then applies to all the individual siblings from that seed pod. Orchid hybridizers have used greges(the aukward plural of grex)for a long time. Orchids, like Nepenthes and Sarracenia, can be crossed on forever
creating very long lineages to keep track of. Eventually the only way to fit all this information is to abbreviate with greges. What would you
rather write on a tag? S. x 'Gin Goblin' or S. [(rubra x oreophila) x flava v. rugelli] x (x Adrian Slack)It makes my hand ache just looking at that
long string of Latin. The Society has not yet approved a method of naming group hybrids for Sarracenia the way they have approved them for
Nepenthes but this will eventually happen. In the mean time, we're the one's writing the tags, so we're going for it people. We will keep a record here
on this page of all the greges we name as there is no formal way of registering them. These plants are hybrids grown from seed and although they are related, they may not look anything
alike.
