Hybrids
American Pitcher Plant Hybrids
Beautiful and easy to grow, American Pitcher Plants may be the most ravenous and underappreciated plants in horticulture. The bizarre and often handsome leaves can sometimes catch thousands of nasty insects such as ants, flies, and wasps. Their flowers are showy, brilliant and very unusual -- a wonderful bonus to an already handsome class of foliage plants.
The Sarracenia are one of the simplest carnivorous plants to grow, and certainly the most rewarding Sarracenia come in all shapes and sizes, so the following are approximate heights of the plants we sell:
S= SMALL or young plants, a typical trumpet variety have summer leaves two to three inches high.
M= MEDIUM plants average three to seven inches high.
L= LARGER plants average seven to fifteen inches or taller and are mature or nearing maturity.
ORIGIN CODES for Sarracenia Hybrids:
SG = Seed Grown, and thus these hybrids can be variable.
VC = Vegetative Clone produced by division or tissue culture, thus these plants are exact duplicates of
the named clone.
GX = Grex or Group Hybrid. The Society has not yet approved a method of naming group hybrids for
Sarracenia the way they have approved them for Nepenthes but this will eventually happen. These
plants are hybrids grown from seed and all the offspring are given a 'group' name. Thus they can
be quite variable. Grex names are often used as a matter of convenience, as the lineage of these
plants can become rather complex, but simple hybrids can be given grex names as well. |
