Temperate Butterworts (Pinguicula)

Pinguicula macrocerasTemperate Butterworts (Pinguicula) survive long, cold winters by dying down to small, cone shaped hibernacula.  They start vigorously growing in Spring and often produce flat, starfish like rosettes.  Their flowers are delicate, funnel shaped and range from bright purple to luminescent white.

They often grow in boggy moors, gravelly cliffs and mossy grottos.  The habitats that temperate Pinguicula grow in are sunny but they are shaded by grasses and ferns.
