This is the perfect soil mix for Dewy Pines (Drosophyllum). It is one part peat, one part pumice, one part lava, one part perlite, one part sand. This bag will fill an 8" pot, a little more than a gallon bag full.
This is the perfect soil mix for Mexican or Tropical Pinguicula! It is made of sand, peat moss, pumice, and perlite. This bag has enough mix to fill at least six 2" pots, about 1/2 gallon of mix.
This soil is already evenly mixed, just add a little distilled water and pot your plants right up!
Get the same custom Nepenthes mix that we use in our nursery! A blend of New Zealand Sphagnum Moss, Fine Orchid Bark, Perlite and Pumice that comes in a one gallon bag. This is about a gallon of mix.
Instructions for Use: Soak the New Zealand sphagnum moss in distilled water for 10 minutes then mix together with the other ingredients until they are well incorporated. When potting up plants in this mix, fill the pot so that it won't settle too much, but do not over pack.
This mix is ideal for American pitcher plants, Venus flytraps, most Sundews, and bladderworts.
This bag is made up of about 1 part perlite to 4 parts professional grade peat moss. We use only the highest quality ingredients with our plants and you can too! Our peat moss is the Sunshine brand, professional-grade, milled Canadian sphagnum peat moss. The professional-grade usually isn't available at retail nurseries and costs about twice as much, but is a much finer quality.
One bag will roughly fill 10 of our 2" pots and is about a gallon.
Mixing Instructions:
Mix all of the peat and perlite together in a large bowl. Be sure and wet it with distilled/rainwater before you begin mixing. This will keep the perlite dust to a minimum which is harmful to breathe in. Keep adding water and mixing until it is very soppy wet. Now you're ready to pot 'em up!
When purchasing your own peat and perlite at another nursery or hardware store, Beware of the MiracleGrow brand! There are added fertilizers that are harmful to carnivores.
The California stream orchid (Epipactis gigantea) grows in permanently wet soil, making it a beautiful and well-behaved addition to any bog. It blooms in the early Spring and goes dormant in the late Summer through Winter. When happy, it will slowly form clumps. These plants are divisions and are blooming in size.
These plants have a seasonal dormancy and can start to die back in late summer/early fall in many areas. If you order them from August to February, they may arrive dormant but will soon grow! Because this is seasonal, the timing can change depending on conditions. In hot areas, they will die back as soon as June or July.
Care Instructions
Growth Habit: Epipactis gigantea forms tall spikes in spring with lance-shaped leaves. As the plant spreads via rhizome, more and more tall stems pop up from the soil. Flowers bloom in succession off of tall stems, dainty and detailed. The flowers can bloom from spring through summer; this bloom time varies based on your seasonal conditions. The plants die back in late summer/early fall and, by winter, can be cut back to the ground. In winter, there can be no visible growth above ground.
Sun: Part sun to dappled full sun. These plants do best grown outside in part sun or even part shade. They can be grown in dappled full sun as long as they receive protection from the afternoon sun and are always well watered. Full sun can be tolerated, but often, the plants will grow shorter and have more uneven leaf color. We grow them in the same pots as your Sarracenia, where the Sarracenia pitchers will naturally shade much of the plant and rhizome.
Water & Humidity: Always sit in at least two inches of distilled or purified water; these plants prefer deep saucers of water or undrained containers to recreate their waterlogged conditions. Use distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis water if possible. These plants grow streamside in their native habitats, seasonally submerged at times, and do not tolerate drying out. Keep them sitting in the water even in winter. These plants do not need humidity.
Temperature: 15 degrees - 100 degrees, needs protection from colder winters and always keep very wet when hot.
Dormancy: All Epipactis have a winter dormancy starting in fall and ending in spring. Many of the stems will turn brown and die back during this time. Leave them outdoors in the sun, sitting in distilled water during this period. If you live in an area that snows over winter, move them indoors on a sunny windowsill in an unheated room or garage, still in sitting sun and watering with distilled water. Or mulch them heavily on the top and sides.
Fertilizer: Apply diluted Maxsea fertilizer once or twice a month to the leaves.
Soil & Repotting: The plant comes potted in a custom mix of four parts: peat moss to one part perlite. Repot every few years, and you’ll find many divisions that can be taken from this vigorous plant!
More Information: For more information on repotting, pests, growing habits, and more, check out our FAQ page or our YouTube channel!
Did you know that the greatest diversity of carnivorous plants occurs in the United States? Did you know they are in danger of going extinct forever?
Venus flytraps, American pitcher plants, Cobra Plants, Sundews, Butterworts, and Bladderworts once filled the vast wetlands of North America. Today, after about 250 years of the deliberate destruction of our wetlands, we estimate that only about 5 percent of our carnivorous plants remain. We have been almost too late to realize the botanical treasures that our wetlands held and even the miraculous Venus flytrap has been relegated to only a handful of sites teetering on the edge of extinction.
The North American Sarracenia Conservancy is fighting to keep that from happening.
Venus flytraps and American pitcher plants used to grow at the site photographed above. Without notice, this site was plowed under and mulched to make it easier for timber trucks to navigate the sandy road. Nearly all of the plants were destroyed, but a precious few remained. The North American Sarracenia Conservancy removed the remaining plants and relocated them to a protected area. This small group of dedicated individuals are fighting to keep our carnivores from going extinct in a very real way. When bogs are to be destroyed for development, with permission from the owners, they will remove the plants and relocate them to a protected site. Their growers also keep plants with location data so that the genetic diversity of the plants can be horticulturally preserved as well.
If you love the plants as much as we do, please donate to help keep our carnivores from disappearing forever from the wild.
Every dollar will go directly to the real, on the ground, conservation of our plants that are in such desperate trouble.
Catopsis berteroniana is a rare, carnivorous bromeliad nicknamed “The Jungle Lantern” because it grows as an epiphyte in trees and is a glowing, bright yellow-green color like a lantern. It produces enzymes to digest insects, which slide down its leaves into the watery reserves at the base. It can grow up to 1.5 feet across and has lime-green leaves coated in a white, chalky substance. It is native to Florida and South America and prefers high humidity and heat. These plants can sometimes wiggle out of the pots in shipping but no need to worry! Just pop them back in the pots!
Care Instructions
Growth Habit: Catopsis beteroniana is an epiphytic bromeliad, growing on trees and attached to other substrate. They grow upright, with deep, vase-like rosettes to catch water and nutrients, and their green leaves are soft, bending downwards from the center of the plant. Lower leaves will die back, leaving a papery husk that you don’t need to trim. They will form pups at the base of the plant over time, making a clump of plants.
Sun: In areas where it can be grown outdoors, bright, diffuse light is best. In greenhouses and terrariums, they appreciate full to part sun with high humidity. If grown under lights, keep the lights on a 10-12 hour day length and hang them 10-12” from the plant, depending on the strength of your light.
Water & Humidity: Water overhead to fill the middle of the plant, keeping the soil moist but not constantly wet. Only use reverse osmosis, distilled, or rainwater, as these plants are very sensitive to the minerals and salts in water. Catopsis need humidity of at least 60% to thrive. Growing them in less humidity can lead to slower growth and more browning/crisping of the leaves. If you have lower humidity, water more frequently.
Temperature: 65 degrees - 85 degrees but can tolerate brief heat waves up to 100 as long as plant is well watered and temperatures cool at night. Does not tolerate cold temperatures.
Dormancy: None needed or required.
Fertilizer: Apply diluted Maxsea fertilizer once or twice a month to the leaves and inside the central water reserve of the plant.
Soil & Repotting: Catopsis require a soil mix that does not hold too much moisture. They can be grown in an orchid mix or a in a mix of long-fibered New Zealand sphagnum moss, orchid bark, pumice, and perlite. You can order our Nepenthes soil to use for your Catopsis, but you do not need to repot your plant for at least a year after receiving it from us. You can repot every three years and only move to a slightly bigger pot. These plants can be grown as ephyphites but it’s easy to accidentally dry them out so be very careful if you try this.
More Information: For more information, check out our FAQ page or our YouTube channel!
Cephalotus follicularis is one of the most desired carnivorous plants in cultivation, it is a curious pitcher plant with compact growth, with bristly, colorful traps that are seemingly yawning for a bite to eat!
Please be aware that this can be a bit tricky to grow. Be sure to read through all of our care instructions and for more information click here to watch this video for care tips!
These small plants are no bigger than a nickel but will rapidly grow with proper care.
Care Instructions
Growth habit: Cephalotus are not large plants but produce tons of pitchers, tumbling over one another. They grow paddle-shaped leaves. Over time, the pitchers can grow over the sides of their pots, but they will not grow tall. Pitchers will grow to 3” tall at maximum.
Sun: Full to part sun. They can be grown in terrariums and do best under grow lights. Depending on the strength of the light, grow them 6-12” from the grow light. They can also be grown outdoors in full to part sun in mild climates.
Water: Water with distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater only. Use the tray method. Cephalotus dislike long periods of being waterlogged, so it is best to allow the water in the tray to evaporate before adding more. Do not fill trays more than 1/4 of the way up the pot. Always use drained containers; shallow, un-drained containers will rot their roots.
Temperature: Daytime temperatures in the 60s-90s with a 10-20 degree drop in night temps, they can tolerate light frost. Cephalotus does best with moderately warm summers and cool to chilly winters. The plants may die in prolonged periods of very hot weather but enjoy cool summer nights. They tolerate brief, light frost down to 20 F degrees but may be killed in lower temperatures. They are best grown in cool highland greenhouses or terrariums. They can be grown outdoors year-round in mild areas.
Dormancy: Cephalotus have no winter dormancy but may grow slowly in the winter.
Fertilizer: Apply diluted Maxsea fertilizer once or twice a month to the leaves and inside the pitchers. Slow-release osmocote pellets can be added to the pitchers with distilled water. Small pitchers may burn back upon feeding, but this will still greatly benefit the plant with nutrients. Small insects can also be fed to pitchers.
Soil & Repotting: Cephalotus do well in a quick drying soil mix. We use two parts sand to one part peat moss. Do not grow them in very water heavy soil mixes. Cephalotus do not like repotting and have stiff, woody roots so be very mindful when transplanting to be gentle. Repot every 3-5 years, they prefer tall pots.
