3 Plant Beginner’s Bog Kit

$ 54.99

This is a great kit to make your very own container planting of a few different kinds of temperate carnivorous plants.  These plants will enjoy being grown outdoors, in many areas and will catch tons of flies, yellow jackets, and gnats.  Our kit is great if you are new to carnivorous plants, want a fun planter for your garden, or just want to get planty! And we will ship this kit for free!

If you order this kit in the summer, it’s best to place it in full morning sun outside, where it will be protected from the afternoon sun a bit, just to reduce the shock to the plants. By the next year, they’ll be fully acclimated and will not need as much protection.

We send you an 8x6 inch plastic pot, XX-large water saucer, our peat moss and perlite mix (premixed), a little long-fibered sphagnum moss to cover holes of the pot, and a selection of temperate plants.  The plants we send vary by month depending on what we have available but in general, you will receive:

One Venus Flytrap (Dionaea), one American Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia), and one Sundew (Drosera). We send you plants either potted or in plugs based on availability. We cannot customize these collections.

Daniela will walk you through building your own bog and care instructions in this video:

Care Instructions
Sun: Full sun outdoors
Water: Always sitting in at least two inches of distilled or purified water
Temperature: 40 degrees - 80 degrees, can even take temperatures from freezing to 100 degrees but only for short periods
Dormancy: Plants in this collection require a winter dormancy starting in October and ending in February. Many of the leaves will turn black and die back during this time. Leave them outdoors in full sun, sitting in distilled water during this period. If you live in an area that snows; over winter them indoors on a sunny windowsill in an unheated room or garage. Still sitting in full sun and distilled water.

Amazing Quality and Packaging

This is my first time ordering from California Carnivores, and I was very impressed with quality of the plants I received. My Venus Fly trap and pitcher plants were catching insects on the first day. The sun dew takes a little while to recover the dew after shipping, but I have a bunch of new growth from all the plants I received.

The packaging of the plants offered great protection to the contents inside. My box had been roughed up from shipping, and everything inside was perfectly intact.

Having the proper soil and sphagnum moss was really appreciated and a nice inclusion to the kit.

The only issue I had (it is probably my fault, I'm new to gardening and planting) was that it was hard to transplant the Venus fly trap and pitcher plants. I tried squeezing the nursery pot several times, holding it upside, putting things inside to help push it out. I then tried to gently pull on the stems to get them out, and only the top part of the soil came up.

I was scared I might have killed the plants, but they are thriving. I watched the videos online to learn about the care for the plants, and that was very helpful as well.

I strongly recommend this product to anyone that is new to gardening or wants to grow some carnivorous plants

Great gift for plant lover

Absolutely a must buy if you love carnivorous plants and can't decide on which ones to get. The instructions that came with the kit were very easy to follow and it really does include everything you'll need. I got this as a gift for my boyfriend and he was so happy when we unboxed it. Everything was packaged very well. We have named them Boggingham Palace. They've already grown so much since we put it together and I will be getting more in the future. Thank you so much!

Awesome Beginner Kit

I bought the beginner kit about a year and a half ago. The fly trap unfortunately did not take off. I have had problems with other fly traps as well even the current one I have. Regardless the Pitcher plant and Sundew are thriving. I really enjoy them and have bought multiple plants since. California Carnivores is a great nursery, haven't had much luck with other plants from other nurseries. Attaching pictures of the pitcher and sundew.
